Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month (VNAM)
Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month started back in 2005 as National Veterinary Nursing Day. It then progressed to a week and since 2012 it has been for a full month.
It was established to inform people of the importance of a veterinary nurse’s role in the practice of keeping your pets safe and well. Over the years more and more practices have become involved throughout the UK.
Various Levels Of Nurses
Registered nurses are well trained and knowledgeable. Did you know they are required to go through at least 15 hours of continued professional development every year? This ensures both their skills and knowledge are always to update.
There are various levels of nurses, you can tell this by their uniforms. Registered nurses at Dragon Vets are in dark blue uniforms, while students have light green striped tops. Some practices have animal nursing assistants, who have completed a specific course which is about a year long.
During veterinary nurse awareness month, different events are organised which can range from sponsored walks to skydives or pet health checks in parks etc.
The video below was produced to explain to the general public the registered veterinary nurse’s role and the training that they go through. Furthermore, here at Dragon vets, we believe this is important that the public understand how they complement the work of a vet and enhance animal health and their welfare in numerous other ways.
In addition, pet owners will see from the video that they play an important role in helping with pets diet and welfare. Medical treatments and minor surgery can also be delegated to the registered nurse by a qualified veterinary surgeon. For your information, we have a full list of the services offered at our veterinary nurse clinics on our website for pets, please see our dedicated page.
Finally, we are encouraging pet owners to watch the video so they have a further understanding of the profession and their role.
