Summer with your dogs
Summer is a great time of year, filled with fun activities for all of the family whilst enjoying the heat. Although we may love the sun ourselves, our pets may have a difficult time adjusting to the warm temperatures.
Dogs do not cope very well in the summer high temperatures, this is due to the fact that the only technique they have to cool down is their tongue. The summer heat we spend all year waiting for, can lead to our furry friends feeling weak and exhausted. Although it is an uncomfortable thought as a pet owner to know your dog is unhappy in its conditions, there are some thing that can be done to relieve your pet in summer months.
– Move the dog into the coolest room possible. This room tends to be with north facing windows and tiled floor. Dogs tend to press themselves against cool flooring to help reduce body temperature. If possible to do so safely, leaving doors open can cool flooring that helps put your dog as much as possible.
– Keep cool water access. The easiest way to do this is to change your dog’s water each time the heat makes it too warm. You could also place your dog’s water in the fridge for a while.
– Chilled cooling mats. Cooling mats are ideal for indoor and outdoor use. It creates a cool space where your dog can rest peacefully, without feeling uncomfortable.
– Ensure that your pet has an area of shade and is never left in direct sunlight for long periods of time. Small children’s garden umbrellas can often do a perfect job if your garden is exposed to sunlight the majority of the time.
